Ted
Ted, a typical teenage boy who lives in the town of Thneed-ville is infatuated with a gorgeous redheaded girl, Audrey. When he learns that Audrey is in love with trees, he sets out to find one to win her love. Throughout the movie Ted's curiosity peaks and he goes on a great adventure. As the main character, the audience sees Ted's struggle between saving the trees and staying out of trouble.

The audience is introduced to the Once-ler as the man who remembers the trees. The main character, Ted, goes to visit him to hear his story. The audience initially sees him as a kooky old man with a raspy voice due to the poor air quality. He hides away in his house outside of the town barriers and is not interested in visitors. However, his interest is peaked when Ted inquires about the trees. Eventually the Once-ler shares his story and the audience sees him transform into an enthusiastic businessman who wants to use the soft leaves of the trees to make his Thneeds. The Once-ler who was initially concerned about the well-being of the animals has a change of heart and begins to care more about making money. The end of the tree supply brings about great change and he begins to implement a plan to reverse the damage that he has caused.

Forest Animals
The forest animals are made up of a group of bears, yellow birds with long necks, and fish that can sing on land. The animals are cute and give the film added humor. Through the animals, the audience sees the impact of the Once-ler's actions. Ultimately they are forced to migrate and leave their beloved land.

The Lorax
As the initial narrator, The Lorax is a fuzzy orange character who speaks for the trees. With his magical powers he appears when the first tree is chopped down. The Lorax appears as a grumpy little man but he clearly cares deeply about the trees and the animals that live in the forest. He warns the Once-ler repeatedly about the consequences but has no power over what the Once-ler does. After the Once-ler has cut down all of the trees the Lorax comes to him to say that he animals are migrating elsewhere because they can no longer live there. At the end of the film, The Lorax returns to congratulate the Once-ler on reversing the problems that he created.

Mayor O'Hare
Mayor O'Hare is a greedy business tycoon who is very successful in the town of Thneed-ville. He does not care about the environment at all, just about money. He rejoices at the lack of trees because he manufactures air in his factories and sells it to the towns people. The use of the factories add to the air quality issue which creates more money for him. When the Mayor learns that Ted is going outside of town and has an interest in trees he threatens Ted. Then, Mayor O'Hare tries to interrupt Ted's to bring back a tree seed. He publicly admits in the end that he does not care about the trees and sings, "let it die, let it die." The town disagrees with him and sends him off on a rocket.
